The therapeutic relationship is both the stage and the script for the deepest work our clients bring into session. Transference and countertransference are not just projections to be managed, but living expressions of a client’s inner parts meeting the therapist’s parts in the relational field.

This advanced training invites clinicians to explore transference and countertransference through a parts-informed perspective, relational psychoanalysis, and attachment theory. We will examine how protective and wounded parts of clients show up in therapy, how therapists’ own parts are activated in countertransference, and how these dynamics can be skillfully navigated to create opportunities for present-day repair.

Through didactic teaching, clinical case examples, and guided experiential practice, participants will learn practical strategies to notice, name, and work with relational dynamics. Emphasis will be placed on cultivating therapist self-awareness, using rupture and repair as clinical interventions, and strengthening the therapeutic alliance to support trauma recovery.

Learning Objectives:

Define and differentiate transference and countertransference.

•Recognize the roles and projections clients may unconsciously pull clinicians into.

Identify therapist parts, biases, and emotional responses when countertransference arises & develop ethical and responsible practices for tending to their own reactions.

Demonstrate an understanding of how rupture and repair processes strengthen therapeutic alliance and foster corrective emotional experiences.

Apply interventions to work with transference in a way that deepens therapy rather than derails it.

Parts in the Mirror: Transference and Countertransference examines how relational dynamics shape the therapeutic process and provides clinicians with practical tools for reflection and repair. The training integrates theory through psychodynamic and parts-informed perspectives, strengthens helping relationships by deepening awareness of the therapeutic bond, and highlights appraisal of individuals by viewing transference responses as living assessments of client needs and capacities. It also reinforces professional orientation and identity by encouraging ethical self-awareness while addressing practice issues such as countertransference management, boundary maintenance, and clinician resilience.
